Our Books in Translation group aims to introduce readers to potentially unfamiliar authors from all around the world. If, like many of us, your tendency is to read primarily books which have been written in English then our group may well provide you with the motivation you need to broaden your horizons.
A list of six books is put together as and when required for members to read in order – each book is discussed via Zoom every 3 – 4 weeks (depending on the length of the book in question). The group preference is for contemporary novels but occasionally a classic may be included – we welcome suggestions from all our members.
In addition to our 3-4 weekly Zoom sessions we also aim for a fortnightly one to discuss various books and topics we have read and would recommend to the group – a theme is usually chosen by someone from the group – so far we have looked at the likes of crime fiction, Irish writers, biographies, humorous fiction, to name but a few. These discussions provide an opportunity to add to the never-ending ‘to read’ list which I suspect is a common problem for all of you who enjoy books.
