Sports & Fitness

We are a group of players/friends who enjoy the benefits of exercise in a welcoming environment.  New members, both beginners and experienced players, will be made very welcome and rackets can be provided.

Tuesday / 10.00am - 12.00 noon / Aurora Aquatic & Leisure Centre

A group of dedicated lady golfers play once a week all year round.  Many, but not all, started from scratch and are enjoying games, together with opportunities for improvement provided by practice.  They are learning from each other and sometimes, if required, from the professional coach, with each member responsible for her own tuition fees.

Wednesday / 1.00pm / Blackwood Golf Club

We play twice a week, on Wednesday and Thursday; however membership of the Wednesday group is now full.  We have some experienced bowlers and some learners and the 'craic' is good.  Coaching is available for new members who will be very welcome at the Thursday group.

Indoor Bowls 1: Wednesday / 9.30am - 12.30pm / George Green Centre, Rathgill Parade
Indoor Bowls 2: Thursday / 1.30pm - 4.30pm / Conlig Community Centre

The emphasis is on improving flexibility, toning the arms, tummy and legs, while working the heart and lungs that little bit harder.  There is no bouncing or jumping.

Thursday / 10.00am - 11.00am / Donaghadee Community Centre

We now have four groups, two for ladies, one for men and one mixed.  Pilates is a series of exercises aimed at strengthening the pelvic floor and abdominal muscles, developing body awareness, improving body alignment and increasing flexibility.  Members should wear comfortable clothes and bring a mat/towel to lie on.  Complete beginners are advised to join the classes in either September or January.

Tuesday / 10.00am - 11.00am / George Green Centre, Rathgill Parade (Ladies)
Tuesday / 11.00am - 12.00 noon / George Green Centre, Rathgill Parade (Mixed)
Friday / 11.00am - 12.00 noon / George Green Centre, Rathgill Parade (Men)
Friday / 12.20pm - 1.20pm / George Green Centre, Rathgill Parade (Ladies)

Table Tennis continues to be 'great craic' as well as keeping us fit!  The group has over 30 members with an almost equal number of men and women players.  Our weekly attendance is usually in the mid twenties and, with three tables, there is not much sitting around!   The afternoon is one of sporting rivalry, friendly coaching and plenty of running, bending and stretching, in an attempt to master that little white ball into a winning shot!  If you're interested in having a go, please come along for a 'taster session' and wear suitable soft-soled footwear.

Thursday / 1.30pm - 4.30pm / George Green Centre, Rathgill Parade

Saturday / 10.00am - 11.00am

We would welcome new members who should contact the Convenor or Assistant Convenor, preferably in the evening.  Bring your racket and trainers - tennis balls are provided.  Come and join us; you will enjoy the fresh air and friendly fellowship!

Wednesday / 10.00am - 12.00 noon / Ward Park Tennis Courts

There are five different groups, to suit walkers at all levels:

The short one-hour walks are designed to follow, as far as possible, fairly flat terrain with the opportunity to use seats and have rest stops if desired.  It is advisable to wear comfortable shoes/boots and bring along a walking aid, for example a stick, if necessary, to ensure greater confidence.  Walks conclude with a welcome cuppa and a chat.

Thursday (except last in month) / 2.00pm - 4.00pm / various locations  (see Magazine)

Energetic Walks
This involves a good brisk walk, usually along well-defined paths and lasting 1½ to two hours, finishing with a cup of tea and a chat.  Some paths can be quite muddy, especially in the winter, so good strong shoes or walking boots are recommended.  We walk all year round.

Thursday (except last in month) / 2.00pm / various locations  (see Magazine)

We have good brisk walks, usually along well-defined paths, lasting four to five hours.

2nd Sunday in month / 10.30am / various locations  (see Magazine)

This group is for experienced walkers only, with a full day over rough terrain mostly in the Mournes.  For safety reasons, prospective members should join the Ramblers initially.

4th Sunday in month / various locations  (see Magazine)

NB: For both Ramblers and Scramblers, participants should bring lunch, drink, waterproofs and spare warm clothing in a back-pack and wear comfortable footwear, preferably boots (essential for many walks, especially in bad weather).

Walk and Talk

Thursday / 2.00pm

Classes start with ten minutes of relaxation followed by gentle stretching, standing and/or balance postures and various bends.  Breathing exercises are also practised, followed by a final 15 minutes of relaxation.  Members do only what they can, so all levels of flexibility are represented.  Wear loose clothing and bring a yoga mat or large thick towel; a blanket or rug is also useful for the relaxation sessions.

Wednesday / 10.30am - 12.00 noon / Hamilton Road Community Hub

Friday / 11.00am - 12.00 noon

Wednesday / 11.00am - 12.00 noon
